Manual espresso machines accumulate coffee oils mainly in the portafilter basket and group head — surfaces you interact with directly every time you pull a shot. With a super-automatic, the brewing happens inside an enclosed brew group that you never touch. Coffee oils, milk proteins, and mineral deposits accumulate in pathways you can't see.
This is what makes routine maintenance non-negotiable. A clogged brew group doesn't warn you with bad shots immediately — it degrades gradually over weeks until the machine throws an error or produces noticeably weaker coffee. By then, the cleaning is harder and the damage (if any) is done.
Most super-automatics run an automatic rinse cycle when you turn them on and again when you turn them off. Don't skip these. They flush the brew group with hot water, preventing coffee residue from drying inside the internal pathways.
If your machine has a milk system — carafe, frother, or automatic steam wand — rinse it after every use. Milk proteins denature quickly at warm temperatures and create biofilm that's difficult to remove once set. A 30-second hot water flush after each milk drink is enough.
Remove, empty, and wash with warm soapy water. The drip tray accumulates coffee residue and, if left too long, develops mold. Most are dishwasher-safe — check your manual.
Empty and rinse weekly. If you use unfiltered tap water, wipe the interior with a soft cloth to remove any mineral film. Refill with filtered water where possible.
Wipe the inside with a dry cloth. Don't use water — moisture in the hopper can cause beans to clump and clog the grinder. Every few months, remove and wash with mild soap, then dry completely before refilling.
Coffee oils accumulate around the spout. Wipe with a damp cloth. On machines with a removable spout, detach and rinse under water.
The cleaning cycle uses a dedicated tablet to dissolve coffee oils and residue inside the brew group. Most De'Longhi machines have a dedicated cleaning button that runs the cycle automatically. The process takes 20–30 minutes and requires no intervention once started.

Descaling removes mineral deposits (limescale) that build up inside the boiler and heating elements. This is different from the cleaning tablet cycle, which targets coffee oils. Both are necessary; neither replaces the other.
Most machines use a water hardness sensor to calculate when descaling is needed. The problem with waiting for the prompt: the sensor measures average hardness over time, not actual scale accumulation inside the boiler. In areas with hard water, scaling happens faster than the sensor accounts for.
Our recommendation: descale every 2 months if your water is hard (above 150 ppm TDS), every 3 months for soft water. Use a descaler designed for espresso machines — not vinegar, which can degrade gaskets and leave residual acid in the brew path.
The short answer: degraded shot quality before any mechanical failure. Coffee oils turn rancid quickly at room temperature and impart bitterness to every subsequent shot. Milk residue in an uncleaned frother becomes a bacterial environment. Limescale in the boiler reduces heating efficiency and, over time, can cause the heating element to fail.
A missed week rarely causes permanent damage. A missed month of cleaning tablets and several missed descaling cycles over a year is when machines start developing chronic issues. The repair costs on a $700+ machine far exceed the cost of a $10 cleaning tablet.
