How to Descale an Espresso Machine
Why Descaling Matters
Minerals dissolved in tap water — primarily calcium and magnesium — precipitate as water heats inside your machine's boiler and accumulate as scale: a whitish, chalky deposit on internal metal surfaces. The buildup compounds with each brew cycle. Scale reduces the efficiency of the heating element, forcing it to consume more energy to reach brewing temperature. In the pipes and group head, deposits narrow the flow path, increasing pump load and reducing extraction consistency over time.
A machine running with significant scale will produce shots that taste flat or sour — the water is no longer reaching the correct temperature or maintaining consistent pressure through the puck. Beyond flavor, the thermal stress created by scale-forced inefficiency shortens the lifespan of heating elements, pump seals, and internal fittings. Descaling is the maintenance step with the most direct impact on both shot quality and machine longevity.
What You Need
- Descaling solution — purpose-formulated, citric acid-based products are the most reliable. The required volume varies by product and machine; always follow the label ratio.
- Fresh water — for mixing with the descaler and for the rinse cycles that follow.
- A catch container — large enough to collect solution as it drains from the group head and steam wand. Many machines use the drip tray for this; others require a separate vessel.
- 20–45 minutes — the process runs in cycles with idle periods between passes. Plan for uninterrupted time.
Step-by-Step Descaling Process
The exact procedure varies by machine model — always consult your machine's manual for model-specific instructions. The steps below cover the standard process for most home espresso machines with a removable water tank.
Step 1 — Prepare the solution
Empty and rinse the water tank. Mix the descaling solution with fresh water according to the product's instructions — typically one sachet dissolved in approximately one liter of water. Fill the tank with the prepared solution. Remove any used filter cartridge from the tank before proceeding; descaling solution should pass through the machine without filtration.
Step 2 — Enter descaling mode
Most modern espresso machines include a dedicated descaling cycle accessible through a button combination or menu. Consult the manual for the exact sequence. Machines without a dedicated mode are descaled by running the solution through the steam wand and group head in alternating intervals as specified by the manufacturer — the principle is the same: the solution must circulate through all heated water circuits.
Step 3 — Run the descaling passes
The machine circulates the solution through the boiler, pipes, and group head in controlled passes. Solution will dispense from the steam wand tip and group head — direct both into a catch container. On machines with an automatic cycle, the process pauses between passes to allow the solution to dwell in the boiler and dissolve accumulated deposits. Do not interrupt the cycle mid-pass.
Step 4 — Rinse thoroughly
Once the full descaling solution has passed through, empty the drip tray and water tank. Refill the tank with fresh, clean water and run at least two complete rinse cycles — this flushes residual descaling agent from all internal surfaces. Residual solution produces a distinctly chemical taste in the next several shots; do not shorten or skip the rinse passes. After the final rinse, run a blank shot of water through the group head and discard before pulling the first espresso.
Verification after descaling: Pull one sacrificial shot of espresso — dose and grind as normal but discard the result. This clears any residual rinse water from the group head and confirms that water temperature and pressure have stabilized. The following shots should reflect the improvement in extraction consistency.

Most modern machines include a water hardness setting during initial setup that calculates and displays a descale alert when the threshold is reached. Treat that alert as a hard deadline, not a suggestion. If your machine lacks an alert system, an inexpensive water hardness test strip gives you the data to set an accurate schedule.
Considerations
Avoid vinegar. White vinegar is sometimes suggested as a substitute descaling agent. It does dissolve scale, but its acidity is inconsistent, it leaves a detectable flavor that is difficult to fully rinse out, and it degrades rubber seals and gaskets faster than purpose-formulated products. Food-grade citric acid-based descalers are inexpensive and safe for all internal components.
Brand-specific solutions. Many manufacturers — De'Longhi, Breville, Jura — produce their own descaling tablets formulated for their machines. Third-party citric acid-based solutions work equivalently for most makes. If your machine is under warranty, verify that third-party descalers are accepted before use.
Descaling is not backflushing. These two maintenance steps address different problems and both are necessary on a regular schedule. Descaling removes mineral deposits from the boiler and water circuit. Backflushing cleans the group head and solenoid valve, removing coffee oils from the brew path. Doing one does not replace the other. Most semi-automatic machines benefit from weekly water backflushing and monthly cleaning tablet backflushing, separate from the descaling schedule.
