Water hardness measures the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium ions. These minerals are what precipitate as scale inside heated espresso machine components. The higher the hardness, the faster scale accumulates — and the shorter the required descaling interval.

How often should I descale my espresso machine?+
The correct interval depends on water hardness and how frequently the machine is used. In soft-water areas, descaling every 3 months is typically sufficient. In moderately hard water, every 6–8 weeks is more appropriate. In hard-water areas — common across the US Midwest, Southwest, and Southern England — monthly descaling is often necessary. How do I find out my water hardness?+
The most accurate method is a water hardness test strip — available inexpensively at hardware stores or online, results are returned in about 60 seconds. Your municipal water supplier is also required to publish annual water quality reports that include hardness data; search for your city's Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). Most espresso machine manufacturers also include a test strip in the box. If none of these are available, your region's general hardness level is a useful starting point: Pacific Northwest and New England tend to be soft; Midwest and Southwest tend to be hard.
Does water hardness affect espresso taste?+
Yes — water hardness affects both extraction chemistry and machine performance. Magnesium and calcium ions interact with coffee compounds during extraction and contribute to flavor complexity at moderate levels. Very soft water produces flat extraction; very hard water produces scale that degrades machine performance. The SCA recommends water with 50–175 ppm (approximately 3–10 gpg) as optimal for espresso extraction.
What happens if I don't descale on schedule?+
Scale accumulates progressively in the boiler, pipes, and group head. The effects compound over time: reduced heating efficiency, increased pump load, inconsistent pressure during extraction, and accelerated wear on seals and heating elements. Machines with significant scale buildup produce shots that taste flat or sour — the water is no longer reaching correct temperature or maintaining consistent pressure. Extended neglect can cause irreversible damage to the heating element.
Can I use filtered water to reduce descaling frequency?+
Yes — using filtered water with lower mineral content reduces scale accumulation and extends the interval between descaling cycles. However, completely demineralized water (TDS near zero) is not recommended: it is more corrosive to internal metal components and produces inferior extraction due to the absence of minerals that aid flavor solubility.
